AVG Antivirus Free Edition Version 8

This free product has been around for some time and I know many of my clients will have used the previous version and will have been prompted to upgrade.

It's a good product for 'free' but I would just ask you to think about the following:

Firstly towards the end of the installation it will ask you if you would like to install an optional web tool bar. This will install into your web browser including a Yahoo search box which can not be hidden and a button to try and get you to go for the paid version. We are all different but I don't want yet another tool bar and search box in my browser slowing it down.

Secondly this version has a Link Scanner which will supposedly show you with a coloured warning symbol, if a link you are about to follow from your search results in Google, Yahoo or MSN are dodgy. In my experiance it does not do what it's supposed to. Carrying out a direct comparison with MacAfee's Site Advisor it repeatedly gave the green for go symbol, for sites that SiteAdvisor warns against and are known to contain malware downloads. Now, there is nothing I want less than a security product which tells me a link is OK to follow when in fact it's not. I'd like to know what anyone else has found, but for me, I'd switch off this facility and definitely install MacAfee Site Advisor instead. This is a free product and you can find it by clicking here

Thirdly if you use Firefox as your web browser you should be aware that there are known compatibility issues with the AVG Link Scanner and Firefox. Things do move on though, so by the time you read this article the problem may have been dealt with.
